Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
La Paz - Pinaya - Puente Roto (4,470 m)
We depart from La Paz with our private transport to Pinaya (3,880 m.s.n.m.), a village located at the foot of Nevado Illimani. Upon arrival, we meet our team of mules and porters. We begin our hike toward the base camp called Puente Roto (4,470m) where we will establish our first campsite. 🏕 Camp at Puente Roto (4,470 m)
Day 2
Puente Roto - Nido de Cóndores (5,470 m)
After breakfast, we walk following a well-marked path along the moraine. We continue our approach on a steep crested path that leads us to the high camp "Nido de Cóndores" (Eagle's Nest) at 5,470m. The terrain offers spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. This acclimatization camp is strategically positioned for our summit attempt. 🏕 Overnight at Nido de Cóndores Refuge.
Day 3
Nido de Cóndores - Summit Illimani (6,439m) - Puente Roto
Summit day begins around midnight. We start our ascent following a ridge, crossing several crevasses before reaching the famous "Escalera al Cielo" (Stairway to Heaven) section. This technical zone features slopes of 45-55 degrees that test our climbing skills. We reach the summit ridge leading to the iconic peak of Illimani. After achieving the summit with stunning views, we descend via the same route back to Puente Roto where our transport awaits. 🧗 Total summit day: 10-12 hours approximately.
Day 4
Reserve Day
This is a reserve day used in case we encounter terrain, weather, or other logistical challenges. It provides flexibility for the expedition and ensures we have adequate time for summit success or safe descent. If not needed, we return to La Paz or have additional acclimatization time.

Requirements & Preparation

Physical Requirements

  • Excellent physical fitness required
  • Ability to climb 10-12 hours on summit day
  • Comfortable carrying 8-12kg pack
  • Significant prior mountaineering experience recommended

Technical Skills

  • Advanced glacier travel techniques required
  • Proficiency with crampons and ice axe
  • Roped team travel and safety procedures
  • Crevasse rescue awareness essential
  • Prior high-altitude climbing experience required

Acclimatization

  • Multiple acclimatization days strongly recommended
  • Prior peaks like Huayna Potosí beneficial
