Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
La Paz - Chacaltaya (5,100 m) - Acclimatization
Depart from La Paz early in the morning and drive through the stunning Cordillera Real. On the way, you'll observe Andean wildlife including auquénidos (llamas, vicuñas, alpacas). Upon arrival at Chacaltaya (5,100m), explore what was once the world's highest ski resort. Today, due to glacial retreat, you'll find seasonal snow and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. This day is dedicated to acclimatization before the main expedition. 🏕 Camp at Chacaltaya (5,100 m)
Day 2
La Paz - Base Camp - Campo Alto Huayna Potosí (5,400 m)
From the base camp, begin ascending toward Campo Alto. Cross the moraine following marked trails with increasing steepness. The technical difficulty is easy (F grade). Enjoy beautiful views of the Zongo Valley throughout the hike. After approximately 2.5 hours of hiking, arrive at the high camp refuge (5,400m) where you'll spend the night. 🏕 Overnight at Camp Alto Refuge.
Day 3
Rest & Acclimatization at Campo Alto
This day is dedicated to acclimatization and rest at Campo Alto. Optional acclimatization walks around the camp. Prepare equipment and mentally prepare for summit day. Early dinner and adequate rest to be ready for the early morning climb. 🏕 Overnight at Camp Alto Refuge.
Day 4
Campo Alto - Summit Huayna Potosí (6,090m) - La Paz
Summit day begins at approximately 2:00 AM, taking advantage of favorable terrain conditions and easy technical difficulty (F grade). Witness a unique sunrise from high altitude. The route features a "small blade" (pala chica) - a 40-meter section with 45-degree slopes. Continue through flat sections and steeper terrain until the final "big blade" (pala grande) - another 45-degree slope leading to the summit. After reaching the summit, descend by the same route back to base camp and return to La Paz. 🧗 Total summit day: 7-8 hours approximately.

Physical Requirements

  • Good physical fitness required
  • Ability to climb 7-8 hours on summit day
  • Comfortable carrying 8-12kg pack
  • Prior acclimatization to 4,000m+ recommended
