Chimborazo Expedition - Andean Heights

Chimborazo Expedition

Conquer Ecuador's Highest Peak - 6,268m (20,564 ft)

Member of International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA) and AGMP

The Ultimate High-Altitude Challenge

Chimborazo stands as Ecuador's highest peak at 6,268 meters (20,564 feet) above sea level. Due to the Earth's equatorial bulge, Chimborazo's summit is actually the farthest point from the Earth's center, making it the closest point to the sun on our planet - even farther from Earth's core than Mount Everest!

This majestic volcano, located in the Western Cordillera, offers one of the most spectacular climbing experiences in the Andes. The mountain was first successfully summited by the legendary British mountaineer Edward Whymper in 1880, after several failed attempts by European explorers dating back to 1736.

Our Chimborazo expedition is designed for experienced mountaineers looking to push their limits at extreme altitude. With proper acclimatization and expert guidance from our IFMGA-certified mountain guides, you'll have the best opportunity to stand on the roof of Ecuador and experience the breathtaking panoramic views of the Andean landscape.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1 – Quito (2,850m) - Riobamba (2,754m)

We transfer to the city of Riobamba by road. After breakfast, we head to the bus station to take our transportation service. Our journey takes approximately 3 hours. Once in the city of Riobamba, we settle into the hotel and rest.

⏱️ Duration: 3 hours transfer + settling in

Day 2 – Riobamba (2,764m) - Refugio Carrel (4,850m) – High Camp (5,300m)

We depart from Riobamba in the early morning. After 2 hours of transport, we arrive at the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve and continue with our transport to Refugio Carrel at 4,850m. We initiate our hike toward the high camp at 5,300m. We will set up our campsite or use the pre-installed domes. Our hike takes approximately 3/4 hour to reach the campground where we rest before our summit attempt.

⏱️ Duration: 2 hours drive + 45 minutes trek

Day 3 – High Camp (5,300m) – Chimborazo Summit (6,263m) - Riobamba (2,764m)

We begin our climb toward the summit at midnight. The first part of the ascent is traversing a moraine with snow and loose rocks until we reach the rocky formation known as El Castillo (5,350m) – a small crest before entering an endless glacier that leads to the summit. Gradually, the slope angle increases (40° to 50°) as we climb higher. We reach the Veintimilla Summit (6,227m). We continue our climb, descending a glacier section and then climbing to reach the main summit – an additional hour of climbing. Once we reach the summit, the enjoyment is complete. Our reward surpasses all expectations with beautiful valley views and a sunrise that captivates with the first rays of the sun. Our return follows the same route – no rappelling or wall climbing. Once at camp, we organize our gear and continue the descent to Refugio Carrel, then take our transport back to the city of Riobamba.

⏱️ Duration: 10-12 hours climbing + descent

Day 4 – Riobamba (2,764m) – Quito (2,850m)

In the early morning, we resume our bus journey heading to the city of Quito.

⏱️ Duration: 3 hours transfer

Technical Information

Difficulty Level

Chimborazo is classified as a technically moderate to difficult climb requiring:

  • Previous mountaineering experience with ice axe and crampons
  • Experience on glaciated terrain and crevasse navigation
  • Excellent physical conditioning and stamina
  • Ability to climb for 6-8 hours at extreme altitude
  • Mental fortitude for challenging conditions

Climbing Route

We primarily use the Western Ridge Route (also known as El Castillo route), which has become the standard route since 2017 due to increased rockfall danger on the traditional Normal Route. This route offers:

  • Better safety from rockfall hazards
  • True expedition-style camping experience
  • Shorter summit day from higher camp
  • More direct access to the summit pyramid

Physical Preparation & Training

Fitness Requirements

Chimborazo demands excellent physical condition. Climbers should be capable of:

  • Hiking continuously for 8-12 hours at altitude
  • Carrying a pack weighing 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs)
  • Performing technical climbing movements in crampons
  • Maintaining focus and coordination at extreme altitude

Recommended Training Program

Begin training at least 3-4 months before your expedition:

  • Cardiovascular Endurance: Running, cycling, or stair climbing for 45-60 minutes, 4-5 times per week
  • Hiking with Weight: Progressive hiking with a weighted pack, building to 6-8 hour days
  • Strength Training: Focus on legs, core, and upper body 2-3 times per week
  • Technical Practice: If possible, practice crampon techniques and ice axe skills
  • Altitude Training: Prior climbs of 4,000-5,000m peaks are highly recommended

Acclimatization Strategy

For optimal acclimatization before attempting Chimborazo, we strongly recommend:

  • Spending 2-3 days in Quito (2,850m) upon arrival
  • Climbing acclimatization peaks such as Pasochoa (4,200m), Rucu Pichincha (4,680m), or Iliniza Norte (5,126m)
  • Attempting Cotopaxi (5,897m) 5-7 days before Chimborazo
  • Following the "climb high, sleep low" principle

Important: Many climbers underestimate Chimborazo. The combination of extreme altitude, cold temperatures, and long summit day makes this one of the most physically demanding climbs in Ecuador.

Best Season to Climb

Optimal Climbing Windows

Chimborazo can be attempted year-round, but the best conditions occur during two main seasons:

June - August

Prime Season: Best weather stability, less precipitation, more consistent snow conditions. Higher success rates.

December - February

Secondary Season: Good conditions with slightly more variable weather. Still excellent for climbing.

Weather Considerations

  • Temperature: Summit temperatures range from -15°C to -25°C (5°F to -13°F)
  • Wind: Strong winds are common, especially in the afternoon and at the summit
  • Snow Conditions: Hard ice in early morning, softening by mid-morning
  • Storms: Can occur any time; flexibility in schedule is essential

Night Climbing: Like all equatorial glaciated peaks, we climb at night (midnight departure) to take advantage of frozen snow conditions and minimize avalanche risk during daylight warming.

Safety & Success Rate

Your safety is our top priority. Our approach includes:

  • Expert Guidance: IFMGA and AGMP certified guides with extensive Chimborazo experience
  • Low Ratios: 1:1 or maximum 2:1 climber-to-guide ratio
  • Modern Route: Using the safer Western Ridge Route avoiding rockfall zones
  • Quality Equipment: Well-maintained climbing and safety equipment
  • Emergency Protocols: Established evacuation procedures and communication systems
  • Weather Monitoring: Real-time weather updates and flexible scheduling

Success Rate: With proper acclimatization and favorable weather, our success rate on Chimborazo is 70-80%. However, safety always takes precedence over summiting.
